Erected a year prior to celebrate Saddam’s 65th Birthday, U.S. Marines helped a small crowd of Iraqis pull down their disenfranchised leader’s monument on April 9, 2003. After draping Old Glory over the fallen statue’s neck they quickly hung a pre-1991 Iraqi flag in its place. While the gesture made for a great photo-op, the symbolic toppling of the regime did little to stem (and ultimately fueled) the bloodshed in Baghdad. (by Mike Slenske)Running Time:2:30
